Adding an At-Risk Preference in School Lottery

I hope the DC Council will act on a proposal before it that would give at-risk students a better shot at getting into a high performing school of their choice by adding an at-risk preference in the lottery system. It would be in addition to the preference already provided for siblings.

It’s too hard right now for the students who need it most to get the quality school choice they deserve and need to be successful. By giving a “preference” for at-risk students, we can increase the likelihood that students who need it the most  will get the educational opportunities they deserve and need. And we will ensure that our schools are more diverse, which was the point of the lottery system to begin with.

If you believe in equitable education opportunities and choices for kids and their families, I hope you’ll join our team by making a donation, putting up a yard sign, or volunteering. Together we can make DC work for all of our students, in all of our zip codes.
